Barnhill Rock Garden

The rock garden is situated on part of a former nine-hole golf course, which was laid out after the Dundee to Aberdeen railway was built more than a century ago.

Plants have come from many sources including the Scottish Rock Garden Club and Dundee Botanic Gardens. Friends of the Barnhill Rock Garden regularly supply new plants including special donations from its members in memory of loved ones and help to propagate plants and shrubs from seeds and cuttings.

Baxter Park and Pavillion

The pavilion and park were gifted to the people of Dundee by prominent flax mill owners, the Baxter family in 1863. Visit the 'David Baxter' page for more information about the family.  The park was laid out by one of the great innovators and achievers of the 19th century, Sir Joseph Paxton and the pavilion was designed by his son in law, George Henry Stokes.

The historic glass fronted Italianate Pavilion positively shines in its restoration and brings classical grandeur to the park. It is situated in the midst of 38 acres of mature parkland and is reached through grand entrance gates and sweeping lawns.

Broughty Ferry Esplanade, Castle Green and Awards Beach

Broughty Ferry has a fantastic sandy resort award winning beach. In the summer thousands of people come to build sand castles and paddle in the water. In the winter the beach becomes a haven for migrating waders. At any time of year it is great for a walk. Please note that animals are not allowed on the beach from May to September

The Esplanade runs along the top of the beach passed sand dunes and sand martin nests to Broughty Castle and Castle Green play park. The play park won a Nancy Ovens award in 2008, with its new equipment and water play features. Castle Green also features a crazy golf course, kiddicars and attractive flower beds, which also are a feature of the quieter Windmill Gardens across the road.

Dawson Park is the result of a bequest in 1940, by Mr William Dawson of Broughty Ferry "for the purpose of providing playing fields, sports grounds or other recreational facilities ..."

It is still a focus for sport in the East end of the city, with numerous pitches of both natural grass and artificial, tennis and basketball courts, a bowling club and various changing facilities.

The park has feature plantings, a sunken garden, and a formal cherry avenue along the north axis, which is particularly stunning in spring.

Play on Wheels (POW) is an exciting mobile play service operating in Dundee, Angus and Fife. POW is managed by Smart Play Network and funded by National Lottery, Big Lottery Improving Lives Fund from 2016 to 2019.

They have two vans filled with scrap resources for children to explore and enjoy creative play. It is home to the Lynch Sport Centre (link is external), and to outside sport facilities such as football pitches, a Multi-use games area (MUGA) and a bowling green. Myrekirk Park is very near South Road Park, has a football pitch and a woodland play area. There is also an ancient stone circle called Balgarthno, created thousands of years ago, Dundee’s oldest man-made structure.

Templeton covers over 150 acres (a football pitch is roughly 2 acres) and is used by a wide range of people and organisations throughout the city for recreation, volunteering opportunities, training for employment and nature conservation. It is a working woodland managed by the Forestry Section.

Details:

The Trottick Mill Ponds were built over 200 years ago to provide water for the Claverhouse Bleach Works - a finishing mill for linen production.

The site is popular with walkers, families and school groups. Also Dundee's Green Circular Cycle Path (link is external) runs through the reserve on its route around the city.

The Ranger Service hold a free family fun day each summer where people come to learn more about the ponds and its wildlife and have a great time.
